Welcome to the world of E-Sports! Whether you’re a gaming enthusiast looking to refine your skills, or perhaps a parent trying to understand the benefits of gaming, the world of E-Sports has much to offer to gamers of any age or skill level! This article is designed as an introduction to help understand some of the more popular games/game types, in addition to breaking them down a bit to assist you with determining which is for you!
Rapidly growing and constantly expanding, E-Sports has evolved from what once began to many as a hobby in their spare time to an active community of professionals in a variety of game types. Drawing more viewers than the NBA, NHL, and even MLB, E-Sports may one day be the most spectated sporting league in America!
First Person Shooters
The Battle Royale style has become popular in many FPS games which releases a set number of players into an arena/warzone, however the classic Attack/Defense Point game type will always be a revisited classic.
Call of Duty Warzone: [Battle Royale] A fast paced, military style FPS in which players are STRONGLY encouraged to utilize teamwork, positioning, and critical thinking to achieve a victory. Individual skill may help the team excel, however working as a unit towards a common goal is often your strongest ally. Players are hot dropped into an arena and must salvage items, complete bounties/contracts, all with heads on a swivel to ensure survival among all team members.
Fortnite: [Battle Royale] Widely known for its dances and emotes, Fortnite is a highly animated FPS in which players can build (ramps, walls… ok, Forts.) mid-encounter to give them an advantage. This game type is often dependent on individual’s skill as encounters can be extremely quick and require fast response times to excel. Although gameplay may be similar across seasons, the items, weapons, and general season theme change which gives a fresh experience on popular topics.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive: [Attack/Defense] Often cited as one of the classics/originals in FPS games, Counter Strike offers a classic 5v5 attack/defense game type on a variety of maps. Fairly straightforward in its gameplay (based largely on individual skill), this game favors/encourages patience and communication between team members to execute strategies as a team to take and hold/defend and retake a set location.
Valorant: [Attack/Defense] Similar to Counter Strike in its attack/defense perspective, but with streamlined maps and the added capability of players to use abilities unique to their hero which can vary anywhere from flashbangs to orbital cannons striking down your foes! Varying team compositions of heroes allow for unique strategies to each map, requiring critical thinking skills, timing, and communication to succeed as a whole.
Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas [MOBA’s]
MOBA’s are often designed to encourage teamwork on a meta level, which is to say, working towards the big picture on an individual level. Most, if not all these games require different builds/aspects from multiple players to reach their goals, and without doing so, will most often result in a subpar gaming experience for the entire team.
DOTA 2: The original DOTA, or Defense of the Ancients, was designed in Blizzard’s Warcraft III, which eventually broke off and found its popularity on Steam. Team members manage their Heroes in a series of phases (laning, advancing, etc) to strengthen their characters for inevitable battle, requiring significant amounts of patience, situational awareness, and encouraging communication between members.
League of Legends: Like DOTA 2 with Steam, this is Riot’s take on the popular MOBA. League of Legends was designed with highly animated heroes, in a slightly more “Family Friendly” style to its player base as some aspects have been streamlined for gameplay. Similar in their hero control and item development, however, abilities, items, and maps are somewhat simplified for more action and less downtime. League requires situational awareness, communication, and responsiveness among teammates to achieve victory.
